How To: American Flag Shorts

Celebrate Fourth of July with a homemade pair of festive cut-offs.

Step 1. Pick out the pair of shorts you will use, or create your own.
I like to go to Goodwill and buy a pair or two,
so that I won't ruin a pair I really like if I mess up the first time.

Step 2. Mark on the jeans where you will be cutting.
Pay attention to the length of your inseam.
It's better to make the shorts too long, than too short.
You can always go back and cut more later if you need.

Step 3. Once you have finished cutting your shorts,
throw them in the washing machine so they can fray naturally.

Step 4. Test out ideas on the denim scraps you have left over.
Below, I tried out the option of painting the pockets with an old pair of shorts.

Step 5. Trace the outline of the pockets on to your fabric.
Cut out the shapes and apply fabric glue along the edges before pressing fabric onto your shorts.

Step 6. Allow several hours to dry.

Above is my finished product. It's really very simple once you have all of your supplies.
I plan to make another pair with a different pattern of fabric later on.
Also, I added rhinestones to the edges of mine because I had a few lying around my craft bucket.
This is only optional.
