The Skinny on Skinnygirl

As most legal-aged women know, alcohol is a diet killer. It's fine in moderation, however, that seems to be a lesson learned after one has gained the dreaded "Freshman Fifteen". When seeking a balance of both health and fun times, low-calorie ingredients are used as cocktail mixers. Vodka-diet soda. Vodka-water. Bleh. Let's be honest, water hardly masks a liquor's flavor.  So when Bethenny Frankel debuted her line of Skinnygirl Cocktails in 2009, it began an instant craze.

I have taste-tested the product several times, especially the original margarita. The bitter flavor took some getting used to at first, but now I have come to expect it. In my opinion, it's still better than Vodka-water or similar concoctions. Plus the pre-made beverage is convenient, the bottle is aesthetically pleasing, and it comes with a promise that you can be a skinny girl. Today the product line has expanded to include decadent flavors of Pina Colada, White Peach Margarita, White Cranberry Cosmopolitan, and more.

When I bought a bottle of Skinnygirl California Red wine the other day, I noticed something important. The label reads "100 calories per serving". There is literally no difference between the standard 4 oz. serving of any other wine. I felt like a fool once I realized this. To top it off, the wine is highly pigmented, and stained my lips, teeth, and fingertips(??) a bluish-purple. The taste is fine, but I expect more from a glass of wine. I doubt I'll buy it again.

I liked the White Peach Margarita.  It's a clear liquid so teeth are safe, and the peach flavoring is pungent, if not, overbearing. I could smell it as soon as I opened the bottle. Despite the strong scent, there was no denying that familiar bitter taste. I attempted to dilute mine with a packet of Crystal Light To-go, while a friend blended hers with ice.

The White Peach label reads "37.2 calories per 1.5oz serving". So I did the math. 750mL is approximately 25 oz. 25oz divided by 1.5 equals 16 and 2/3........basically, the entire bottle contains 620 calories. This is misleading to the buyer because this is a cocktail, not a shot which is only 1.5oz serving. One rather small cocktail would be at least 4 oz. If you're drinking in moderation. Eh, I suppose it's still better than what's hidden inside of a large frozen daiquiri.

All in all, I likely won't be buying Skinnygirl products again. It doesn't taste good and isn't as health-conscious as it appears. A better solution is the addition of Crystal Light To-go packets or homemade recipes like the Guavarita from Southern Curls and Pearls.

What are your thoughts? Are you a fan of Skinnygirl products? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I've tasted the white cranberry cosmo and it's been sitting in my fridge for almost 3 months now if that tells you anything. Blech.

  2. I believe the marketing is brilliant. If you are familiar with your calorie intake for a week and you want to drink an entire bottle... well then you have the math to do so and you will be okay to still fit into your skinny jeans. Nichole, RD
